Tesla Electric Vehicle Charging in Hong Kong

Tesla Supercharger

Hong Kong is a relatively small city which means most people will only drive short distances daily. There many types are charging available throughout Hong Kong which makes charging your electric vehicle rather easy. Although, the growing number of electric vehicles in Hong Kong might make finding an available charging station different during meal times or over the weekend or at busy locations. As of November 2020, there are 17,598 EVs for road use in Hong Kong. As of September 2020, there are 3,219 EV chargers for public use in Hong Kong.

Having a Tesla gives you more options to charge as you could charge for free at Tesla Destination Chargers or you could opt to pay for Supercharging at Tesla Superchargers which are growing in numbers throughout Hong Kong.

Including Tesla, there are currently 4 EV charging providers in Hong Kong. The two government regulated power supplier in the city of Hong Kong, CLP Power and HK Electric. Also, a private company, called Hong Kong EV Power.

As of 2021, all public charging provided by these providers are free of charge only except for Tesla Supercharging.

CLP Power

CLP Quick Charger with DC charging for CHAdeMO and CCS Combo connectors as well as a Type 2 AC connector. CHAdeMO and CCS cannot be used at the same time.

CLP Offers Semi-Quick Charge (<20kW) and Quick Charge (>20kw) stations for free throughout Hong Kong.

With the CLP quick charge, I can get on average around 40kW on the Model 3. With the Semi-Quick Charge, as it is AC only, I could only get around 8kW.

Hong Kong EV Power

EV Power Station with CHAdeMO and CCS Combo and a Type 2 Socket which requires your own cable.

With the EV Power Station CSS Combo, I could only get around 20kW.

There are a number of Tesla Destination Charging locations around Hong Kong. They are mostly in public parking lots where although the charging is free, you will still have to pay for hourly parking. The Destination Charging is usually with the Tesla Wall Connector which gives you a maximum of 11kW AC charging.

Of course, there are a number of Supercharging stations in Hong Kong as well. V3 supercharging station was already introduced in Hong Kong late 2020. It gives a theoretically 250kW charging speed but in my experience, I am only getting about 200kW between 10%-30% charge and progressively back to normal supercharging speeds when the battery is up from 50% onwards.
